Front door detail. Area between door knob spindle & keyhole had deteriorated long ago, so at some point was covered with a single stamped metal door-lock plate with matching stamped metal door knob. When removed, the outline of the original door knob rose & keyhole escutcheon were visible: identical to all other doors in this house. Damage was rebuilt with epoxy; iron rose, keyhole escutcheon & door knob salvaged from other doors in City Point placed on bulk trash heaps. [sigh...] Original door knob probably was porcelain [like all other door knobs in house]. Additional lock above door knob probably added late 19th c. Notice that builder mounted door backwards: puttied side of glass should be facing out to seal out water. Fortunately porch is large enough that rain never hits door.
